University needs to be self sufficient

Two years after an audit uncovered financial irregularities at the University of Guyana, Minister of Education, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine said that the institution is in a better financial state. The audit was reported to have been conducted by experts from the University of the West Indies, Despite this however, the Minister stated that the institution needs to gain financial independence. It is currently exploring options that could possibly create an inflow of money for the University. A self-sufficient University he stated would no longer need government assistance for its upkeep. While he admitted that he had previously stated the institution should be adequately funded by the Government, he said that it should be capable of generating its own funds. He stated that Government funding of the University would provide it with control over the University and that right should be reserved for the council. In light of the sit in staged by the University of Guyana Senior Staff Association and the University of Guyana Worker’s Union for improved wages, salaries and benefits for all employees earlier this year, Dr Roopnaraine said that mechanisms must be put in place to ensure that lecturers receive competitive salaries and wages. The Minister also commented on the need for a thorough physical upgrade for the University as only several parts are being worked on at the moment. The programme currently in place was said to hopefully improve the standards of the University.
