Today is a very important day for Guyana. It could turn out to be the day when we turn a new page in our country’s history. As I drove around Georgetown and the East Coast this morning, I saw the determination on the faces of voters. There is something about the human spirit that defies its permanent strangulation. It brought tears to my eyes to see old men and women dragging themselves to the polls—defiantly and triumphantly. And the younger men and women who lifted their stained fingers to the sky in a show of freedom as they shouted “Green and Gold.” Always, our people-poor people-have showed us the way. The day is far from over. But it is not too early to salute ourselves. We now await the verdict.
